SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 47

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of:
- Much of northern Illinois
- Northern Indiana
- Southwestern Lower Michigan
- Lake Michigan
effective this Thursday morning and evening from 11:25 AM until 7:00 PM CST.
Hail to 2 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 MPH, and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 70 statute miles north and south of a line from 55 miles north of Peoria, Illinois to 40 miles north-northeast of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Remember, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for Severe Thunderstorm in and close to the Watch Area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
DISCUSSION: A powerful trough and deep upper low is rotating toward the upper Mississippi Valley. A line of low topped thunderstorms are developing along the cold front in western Illinois and will move rapidly northeastward across the watch area this afternoon. The primary severe threat will be damaging winds and hail associated with the line as it moves across northern Illinois into northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.
In north central Illinois, the counties in the watch area are:
- Boone
- De Kalb
- La Salle
- Lee
- Ogle
- Winnebago
In northeast Illinois, the counties in the watch area are:
- Cook
- DuPage
- Grundy
- Kane
- Kankakee
- Kendall
- Lake
- McHenry
- Will
No Wisconsin counties are included in this watch.
