Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Flood Warning for the Des Plaines River from:

  • Russell to Gurnee until 7:00 AM CDT Monday August 27th.
  • Gurnee to Des Plaines until 7:00 PM CDT Saturday August 25th.

As much as 3-6″ of rain has fallen over portions of the upper Des Plaines River basin in southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois over the past 48 hours.  This is resulting in rises on the Des Plaines River in Lake County and points downstream.

At 7:00 AM the stage at Russell was 6.2 feet.  Flood stage is 7.0 feet.  The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by early Tuesday and continue to rise to near 8.5 feet by early Wednesday morning.  The river is expected to fall below flood stage by next Monday morning.  At 8.0 feet, park and agricultural lands flood with water approaching a few houses near the river.

At 7:30 AM the stage at Gurnee was 6.7 feet.  Flood stage is 7.0 feet.  The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by late this morning and continue to rise to near 7.2 feet by early Tuesday.  The river is expected to fall below flood stage by Saturday afternoon.  At 7.0 feet, flooding begins to impact the lowest areas directly adjacent to the river.
