EF0 Tornado In Racine County

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

This afternoon a weak EF0 tornado briefly touched down in Racine County, Wisconsin.  I’ve downloaded the applicable radar volume scans for you, and rendered them in 3D.  Following these images is the press release from the NWS Milwaukee office, which includes images from an FAA radar closer to the storm than the radar in Sullivan.

From the NWS in Milwaukee:

An upper level trough, combined with an unstable air mass, produced scattered strong thunderstorms across south central and southeast Wisconsin during the afternoon on Thursday.  These thunderstorms produced 1/2″ to 3/4″ hail.

Around 3:50 PM in northern Racine County, an outflow boundary from thunderstorms to the north intersected with a new thunderstorm that produced a brief tornado touchdown around the town of North Cape, which is about 15 miles west of Racine.  The following reflectivity and velocity images highlight the weak tornado.

National Weather Service personnel surveyed the damage and classified it as an EF0 tornado.  According to witnesses and the storm survey team, the tornado path was only 1/10th of a mile and around 20 yards wide.  Time on the ground was around 1 minute.  Shingle damage to one roof, along with damage to 3 trees were observed.  Time of touchdown was estimated to be 3:50 PM Thursday September 27 2007.

Here is a map showing the location of the brief, weak tornado which travelled east-southeast through the intersection of Three Mile Road and 68th Street:

These storms were small, so these images are zoomed in quite a bit.  These images are from the FAA Terminal Doppler Radar located in northwest Racine County.
