RED FLAG WARNING

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL

403 PM CDT WEDNESDAY MAY 23  2007

… DRY WEATHER AND INCREASING WINDS HAVE CREATED HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS FOR FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL …

Low relative humidity and strong winds, combined with the dry conditions due to little recent rainfall, have set up an environment which could lead to explosive fire growth.  Enhanced fire growth potential will exist until around sunset, when winds will subside and decreasing temperatures will allow relative humidity levels to increase.

… RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 8:00 PM CDT THIS EVENING …

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Red Flag Warning which is in effect until 8:00 PM CDT this evening.

Low relative humidity, strong winds, and dry weather conditions have set up an environment which could lead to explosive fire growth.  There has been little rainfall in recent days, so fuel moisture levels are very low.  The enhanced fire growth potential will exist until around sunset, when winds will subside and decreasing temperatures will allow relative humidity levels to increase.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will occur shortly.  A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and high temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.
