Happy Holidays and do you want winter for the New Year (11AM Christmas Day 2006)

First, Happy Hoildays to all.

Second, let’s be honest. Of course you want winter weather for the new year. That’s why you live here. If you don’t like cold and snow, why do you live here? It seems that every year I hear people wanting a mild winter. I hope you realize that sooner or later the gravy train will end and when it does, the division will be even wider. There will be people cheering, people frowning and nothing in between. I know, there are some that have no choice and I understand. But I like winter weather, -20, 15″ of snow, 50 mph winds, everyday. I suppose that’s the weather geek in me but I know there are other geeks out there and don’t deny it. Enjoy it. Afterall, if the global warming guys have their way, there won’t be any winters in 100 years, Not that we will care unless you plan on living to 175 but that discussion is for another day.

Remember the storm I talked about last week for later this week. It’s BACK. T minus zero is New Years eve, give or take 12 hours. A strong storm will form over the southern plains on Thursday and move into the midwest over the weekend. Current track is SE Oklahoma to NE Illinois. That should keep us on the warm side. However, a track change of 100 south will make it very interesting. So let’s keep an I on it.

Guess what, the first indications of the COLD have popped up on the GFS. Big ridge forming of the west coast and big through over the midwest. Now this is 16 days out and forecast accuracy is only about 15% at best. In 5 days, if the pattern progresses, the realization of an artic blast will be, indeed real. An interesting way to know when it’s time is to watch the weather in Alaska. First it warms up, then the temp falls to -40. When it warms up again. That gives us about 3-4 days to the arrival.

Have lots of food today.

Bye fo now.
