Special Arctic Outbreak Weather Post 7PM (01-28-07)
Sunday, January 28th, 2007Threat of significant sub-zero weather is possible sometime between Feb 3-7. Models coming into agreement on temps during that period to be significantly below-zero overnight and the possibility one or two sub-zero days. 1994 was the last time temperatures were this cold. It’s still a bit early to nail down any solid numbers but the the chance of overnight lows of -10 or lower appear to be better than 50% and a 25% chance of a sub-zero day. Keep in mind that without snowcover of 1″ of more, severe damage can occur with scrubery less than 3 feet tall. With snowcover of 4″ or more, damage could be considerably less with one drawback. Temperatures can be from 4 to 8 degrees lower. One thing going for us is the abundant moisture we have received in the last several months. This acts as an additional insulator. Areas in the northwest half of Lake county will be at greatest risk for lower temperatures and less scrubery damage as there is more snow on the ground. However, the southeast portion of the county could be at greater risk because of the lack of snow and the close proximity of snow cover going all the way back to the northern territory in Canada.
More in a couple of days as more information becomes available.
